Diabetes Research

Diabetes is a chronic condition that can lead to severe complications, such as heart disease, kidney failure, and vision loss. With no current cure, research is vital to finding new ways to prevent, treat, and manage the disease. The University of Adelaide's researchers are working to uncover innovative solutions to improve the lives of those affected by diabetes.

Your donations can make a significant difference by funding groundbreaking studies, helping to reduce the incidence of diabetes, and enhancing the quality of life for millions. Your donation will be applied towards research activities undertaken at the University relating to diabetes.

  • Almost 1 in 5 Australians aged 80–84 are living with diabetes, a rate almost 30 times higher than in those under 40.
  • After adjusting for age, diabetes is 1.3 times more common in males than females.
  • Between 2000 and 2021, the number of Australians living with diabetes nearly tripled, from 460,000 to 1.3 million.
  • Around 1.3 million people are hospitalised with diabetes-related conditions annually.
