Vet Emergency Fund
Every week injured wildlife, homeless and rescue animals, and surrendered pets are abandoned at the Roseworthy Veterinary Hospital (RVH) at the University of Adelaide, putting the clinic and staff under significant pressure.
Despite the passionate and dedicated team's best efforts, including staff paying for surgeries, currently it is not possible to meet the needs of all the animals including feeding, treatment, surgeries and ongoing care. Sadly, this level of care also places our vets at significant increased risk of mental health challenges and compassion fatigue.
To meet the increasing needs of the community and support our team, the University has established the Vet Emergency Fund.
- Approximately 200,000 stray or surrendered dogs are admitted to shelters and municipal rescue facilities each year in Australia. A figure on the rise with the increased cost of living.
- Each year on average, over 90,000 protected Australian animals from hundreds of species (including many threatened species) become injured, sick or orphaned and need treatment and care. Currently there is no national funding available to support these animals.
- Due to significant occupation-related stress, including treating the high rates of rescue and surrendered animals, Veterinarians have almost four times the suicide rate of the Australian population.
- The RVH is a teaching hospital, therefore all animals that receive treatment provides additional teaching and learning opportunities for the next generation of vets.
